Wired Journalists

A Publish2 network

I'll start. How are you developing and nurturing digital interests at your properties (assuming they are newspapers)? We started building interest and experimentation from the ground up some years ago, but the organic growth has slowed. Now I'm starting some more top down innovation, but, not surprisingly, it is taking longer to take hold.

John,
We're going through a similar "plateau" phase that you mention. A couple of years ago, we set ambitious goals for publishing news and other content online, starting multimedia such as video, etc. The staff did a great job. Our page views, creativity and enthusiasm all soared.
We started the initiative by giving key staff members the ability to lead teams charged with specific parts of our online plans: multimedia, community conversation, databases, etc. This helped the staff buy-in and helped the development of the staff members who led their groups.
Now, we've leveled off a bit -- though our page views continue to grow rapidly. Certainly, there is much more that we can do. But I want to aim our efforts where we can do the best journalism while being relevant to our online community. The tricky part is to push the innovation, while still developing our multimedia skills -- without letting the print product slide.
Sound familiar?
Cheers,
Henry
