I had an idea, maybe a little off the wall.

I don't now have the capital or confidence to out all on my own. I often like collaboration. I've been wishing for a good partner.

But maybe it would be better to think bigger. A group of about 50 might be able to get something off the ground with each making a relatively small investment of time and money.

I'm calling the idea "full-deck" for now, because theoretically, 52 people could each put in one full-time week for at least the first year.

Do you have any interest in something like this?

I'm not sure I have any details right now.

I was just curious about whether anyone might be interested in spreading out over about 50 people the risk and investment of a starting a news operation or other civic media.

Maurreen, If its something you strongly believe in and know has untapped potential, I dont mind risking a week or even two to work on this dream of yours.

The amount of learning that each one of your members from your team of 52 could achieve would be very significant.

Thank you, Aamer.

This general idea has garnered very little interest, so I don't expect it to happen.

But I do think there is a lot of untapped potential, especially among those with lower incomes. Also among some minority communities. And small geographic communities.

Some examples:
* The county of north of mine has a couple of weekly newspapers but minimal Web presence.
* The state I live in has, I guesstimate, about 7 percent Hispanic population. But I believe the Spanish-language media is concentrated in a few metro areas.
* Lower-income people have little or no access to computers. They more likely have cell phones, which is one opportunity.
* The developing world has a lot of potential.

Hyper-local is the next big thing. I don't see a loose collaberation of far-flung journos making something like that take off...

But hyper-local doesn't have to be geographic, so in that context, it might.

That's true. Got me there...
