Backpack wherever news is breaking and see if correspondents or stringers based there might need to take a vacation elsewhere. They might let you fill in for a couple of weeks. You build up clips. YOu get your own gigs going. That's how I got to know some editors (on Fleet Street in the UK, even though I was am American.) And cyberpromote yourself, too.

Hi all, just launched @press_freedom on Twitter which tracks news from RSF, IFJ, CPJ, Frontline blog and any relevant news from Journalism.co.uk - press freedom and media ethics stories from around the world. Basically it all feeds into our Timeline page, and then to Twitter - would be good to get some productive debate and conversations going. If you're on Publish2 you can join the International Journalists group and we'll see where that goes...

I'm interested in doing conservation filmmaking and photojournalism in Sumatra and Borneo. Can anybody here do a reality check for me on such issues as safety for a woman traveling alone with video and photography equipment? I would connect with in-country conservationists at field stations, but would be traveling alone from Point A to Point B. Does anybody have any advice, suggestions, tips, warnings, solutions, etc.?

Interested in Somaliland? We'll be debating this country at the Frontline Club tonight. And you can watch online - Tues 9 Sept, 7.30pm UK time

http://www.ustream.tv/channel/frontline-club

In May 1991 Somaliland declared independence from the rest of Somalia and over the past 17 years the government there has restored law and order to make it one of the must democratic and functioning societies in the Horn of Africa. In stark contrast to its neighbour Somalia, Somaliland has become an oasis of peace, stability and progress and a haven for thousands of Somalis fleeing from their war-torn country.

Yet Somaliland's independence and sovereignty is still not recognised by most of the international community including Britain. What are the obstacles in the way of international recognition and is this really the best way forward?

How have the people of Somaliland built such a stable democracy, society and institutions in such a war-torn region and what are the lessons other de facto states can learn from it?

Taking part will be:

(Chair) Mike Wooldridge (BBC)
Richard Dowden (Royal African Society)
Adam Mussa Jibril (Somaliland representative to the UK)
Michael Walls - (Somaliland Focus UK)
Edward Mason (Independent Diplomat)

Hope you can make it.

A good point Mustafa - one we discussed in relation to Somalia last week on the frontline blog,

http://www.fromthefrontline.co.uk/blogs/index.php?blog=5&title=the_forgotten_victims_in_somalia&more=1&c=1&tb=1&pb=1

Rob, a journalist based in Nairobi, made an excellent point in the comments,

as journalists we have a responsibility to consider the potential dangers to everyone in our party. In Mogadishu I always do as I'm told by my fixer but am continually astounded by the number of people who seem to think they know best. In Mogadishu that sort of attitude costs lives, and not always your own.

Is it good to ignore your tips when leaving for hostile environment?

Who dares to work in a country where journalists are always just like a goat in the hands of butcher?, if anyone, why many journalists try to go for assignment and they ignore taking tips from the local journalists in the area they go for. I think this makes the number of journo graves more so why International Journalist always ignore local ones in the hostile area in order to avoid trouble??????..
