You're a reporter. Something on the scanner is on fire. The photographers are all busy and there's a point & shoot in the cabinet. What do you do, hot shot, what do you do?

The Canon Xsi is a pretty good camera to start with and you have fine lens to go with it.

My suggestion is to look at loads of photojournalist work, it will give you an idea of how other photographers communicate ideas through images.

Everything in your photos should say something for the photo to serve it's communicative purpose. The lighting, the colors, and the composition you use are elements that will be essential to the message you are trying to give about the subject.

There are many good photographers here on wired journalists. I'm sure they'll be more than happy to give you some tips

Regards and good luck

I am primarily a writer/editor, but just last year, I bought a Canon Digital Rebel XSi camera and got an extra lens with it- a 70-200mm f/2.8 lens. Since then, I've been dabbling in photography, looking for ways to get more versatile as a journalist. It's going well so far, check out my work and feel free to critique it at www.brianmanzullo.com/photography. Thanks!

You're a reporter. Something on the scanner is on fire. The photographers are all busy and there's a point & shoot in the cabinet. What do you do, hot shot, what do you do?

1.- You take the camera, flip it to automatic, and try to take the best pic possible.

2.- You scream?

Actually, nowadays, most reporters carry a camera with them. If they are properly informed about what is happening, they will also be able to take a photo that can at least illustrate. If you're not well informed, it's better to ask for help ... always

Any suggestions on using the Nikon D70? I don't have much experience with Nikons and would love some pointers.

I just posted a topic in the discussion forum.

I'm looking to talk about reporters carrying cameras.

Check out the post and add your thoughts.

Love to hear from you.

Here's a recording of a talk last night at the Frontline Club in London about the work of the first female war photographer Gerda Taro. Hope you find it interesting :)
