I'm interested in starting a news podcast that would be available on itunes for downloading in time for the morning commute. Has anyone done this, and what were the results?

We're thinking of launching a morning preview podcast giving people a brief rundown of news items, what projects are coming down the pipe, weather any breaking news, etc. Something in the 2 minute range.

I don't want to sound like a naysayer but we have not seen much evidence of interest for our two podcasts aimed at a younger audience: local music scene and high school sports. It's hard to get a good read on page views but our number of subscribers is not as strong as I had hoped.

This week, we also spent time interviewing some college students for a product we're developing. While there was a lot of interest in videos, interaction and just plain news, they were less enthralled with podcasts. They have their iPods all the time but overwhelmingly for music, not podcasts.

That said, there might be more of an audience for communities where commuting is a bigger deal than here.

I'm no expert, and I didn't have a chance to check out the credibility of Podcasting News, but check out their list of the top 25 podcasts:

Notice the high number of science shows, plus comedy, the usual porn, and plenty of news-you-can-use for various interest groups.
