Insight on blogging from reporter Sheila Hagar

Our next step with our blogs is to get the bloggers to seek out other bloggers in the community and post comments, link to them, etc. I did a video interview with one of our reporters, Sheila Hagar (her From the Storage Room blog is our most popular) to ask her what she has gotten out of blogging so far.

It's unedited so it's a bit long.

Union-Bulletin blogs - take 2

We've just relaunched our blogs. We initially launched blogs earlier this year but they were poorly promoted and not updated very often which resulted in very little traffic. Very little.

About 3 weeks ago we relaunched them, promoted them and started running the latest blog headlines right on union-bulletin.com. The bloggers dove into them right away and started to post multiple times per week. I added some plug-ins so that readers can consume the content in a variety of ways including via ema… Continue

Some digital updates from Walla Walla

I recently was promoted to Online Services Manager and tasked with expanding and growing our online content and products. Which means: Create features and websites that will attract all of Walla Walla. And here is a part-time web content person. Oh and make sure you do more outreach into the community and help fill niches.

These are all challenges that I welcome. In particular the community outreach aspect of it really appeals to me. That is one of the priorities that I have set up for our new… Continue

Webcast experiment

We've been producing a daily news webcast for the past 2 months. Basically a scripted update of the upcoming news items usually for that day. I have been shooting and editing the webcast every morning and have tried to include photos and video clips whenever possible. The length has been about 3 minutes. Promotion has been pretty much non-existent. I've posted links via our Twitter feed. Viewership never got past about 60 views per day and in fact have steadily decreased to about 10 a day now.… Continue

Hey Carlos,
See that you're mandated with growing your audience and more outreach. Would love to talk and share some ideas from my experience. Great to see you're having success with blogs.
Best,
Tammi

Well, welcome to the Inland Northwest! I hope that didn't seem off-putting. I just like to get to know people in this increasingly fractured society. It sounds like you've got a lot on your plate in your new job. I'm pretty new to this stuff too, and my role is probably less all-encompassing than yours. But it would be great to bounce ideas around.

Hi. Thanks for the friend invite. I'm not sure we've met, and I generally like to know folks a little bit before adding them as contacts. How did you get into the Web producing gig?

Hello there! Please forgive me, but do we know each other? I've always been terrible with names, and now the problem is compounded because I meet so many people online through my blog. Please remind me...
