It is interesting, indeed. I think there is an opportunity in these kinds of cooperatives or associations, even if you're not an ex-LA Times or one of the 50 best canadian writers :)
There is a similar thing in Canada, the Canadian writers group. It's a pretty exclusive agency, since they only accept the best and most established freelance writers as members. The concept is interesting, though.
