Amir- I'm a photojournalism major in college right now, and I agree. It's tough listening to all the doom and gloom people are saying about journalism and photojournalsim right now, but you're completely right. It's not about fearing the new tech...

Heh, sorry. Speaking of HTML, I really messed it up on that comment.

In my experience, the more you can do, the better. Remember when it was all about print in journalism school and they told you, you need to be able to report everything (every beat)? It's like that with knowledge of different media now. A couple ...

Here it is: the last year of my college career. I've learned a lot, yet I have this strange sneaking suspicion that it doesn't end here. The way my collegiate education has panned out I've been left with one year to go and not a lot to do (4 class...

For a small camera this one has pretty good qulity-it's HD up to 720p...but the Kodak Zi6 HD camera small upright handheld camera (Kind of like the Flip-only better quality than that). Easy to carry, cause it's kind of built like a point and shoot...

No. 4 is key. I started up my company's Twitter feed late last year and made the initial mistake of piping all our RSS feeds through TwitterFeed — don't do that. It's spammy and people hate it. Having a real person speak from your account on Twitt...

As I mentioned in my last post, I just got hired for my school's online editor position. A very good suggestion was made to keep up a blog on my experience, as a guide to help others unsure of how to go about being a journalist in the online realm...

Angela - Very good point. Using social media is no good if you're not going to be social (in fact, it may even be detrimental to your cause). Cassandra - If you blog everything — especially your mishaps and frustrations — it could greatly improve...

Paul: That's a good idea. Blogging about it might not only be useful for others, but might help sort out my ideas as well. Angela: I've heard someone else mention they would read more links from news places if they interact more. I'm going to hav...

A social media strategy is extremely important. i would encourage you though, to think more about an "engagement" strategy. Because I see too many organizations get excited over the tools, get involved on every single platform and not engage a sin...

Those are lofty goals, but if you can get a few done that's great. One of my biggest regrets from my time as editor of Central Washington's Observer was that I didn't build up our online/social networking presence more. We had a crappy Web site at...

I've heard somewhere that the West Seattle blog is one of the best maintained ones Seattle has. I'll have to check that out.

On a student level we're actually trying to do the same thing. I guess the only point I would have is what everybody has already been saying--take care to not put up anything you don't want seen. As it were, these are questions I'm going to have t...

Bio
I'm a student photojournalist. When I first got to college I wasn't sure what I wanted to do. I was interested in taking photos, but there were so many different things I was interested in that I didn't know what profession would fit me. Then I got into the journalism program and found out about the changing industry that needs people who are good at just about...everything. So I'm currently cultivating my backpack journalism skills. I've been a writer, a photographer, I'm currently learning about video production and online media.

Now with Video!

Here it is: the last year of my college career. I've learned a lot, yet I have this strange sneaking suspicion that it doesn't end here. The way my collegiate education has panned out I've been left with one year to go and not a lot to do (4 classes left yet one of them offered in the Spring). So what's my plan of attack? Clip harvesting. And whats new in my clips endeavor? Video...

A link a day

Pshfph...

Linking. Who doesn't know the ins and outs of linking already???

Well, having just started to deal with it in our college newsroom, I've just stared exploring questions about it. More thoughts here. (look look! A link!)

Falling off the social media planet

Here I am again.

At the beginning of this school quarter I was so gung ho about all the social media I was going to put out there. I was especially gung ho about starting as the Online Editor of the Western Front -- WWU's newspaper.

Don't get me wrong, I'm still gung ho about it. However, I was not expecting the work load when I came into this position. (Let me rephrase that. I understood the workload, I just hadn't ... conceptualized it yet). So sorry, dear reader, for falling off the social… Continue

Early Observations

As I mentioned in my last post, I just got hired for my school's online editor position. A very good suggestion was made to keep up a blog on my experience, as a guide to help others unsure of how to go about being a journalist in the online realm, and to help me work out my ideas, frustrations, things that worked and those that didn't, etc.

Eventually I'll move it onto it's own platform/my website (as of right now,… Continue

Fancy New Title

I'm going to have to get a lot better at keeping up on this social networking business. Especially now that I've been hired on as the Online Editor at our school's paper- The Western Front.

It's going to be a lot of work, but I'm looking forward to it. It's very surly something people are going to like seeing on my resume once I get out into the real world at any rate.

I've got some big ideas for the online paper though. I'm hopi… Continue

We've talked with Mark a few times, actually, mostly at Jason Preston's Pitch meet-ups.

We don't have any official partnership with Mark. Our focus on being hyper-local just has to do with our business model and journalistic strategy. No one logs onto our Web sites to see what's going on in Iraq, or even to find out what's happening in Seattle. Our goal is to report news that you literally can't get anywhere else — what was the score of your kid's little league game? etc.

I do like what Mark's doing, though. He's got a lot of good ideas about the journalism industry and I'm interested to see what he does in the future.
