Good luck. 'Friad I have no cogent advice on getting out of town. I succeeded, but my path was different. Best of luck though.

Hi Janalyn. IMHO, you should put your graduation date in the cover letter. The information is in your resume, so why not be up front?

It's up to you to introduce yourself as the best candidate for the job. It's up to the employer to decide how quickly they need to fill it with the right candidate.

You might want to read through Joe Grimm's "Ask the Recruiter" column at Poynter Online.

Joe has launched a lot of young journalist careers. If you still have questions or need some pointers, send him a message. He's on this board. You can tell him I sent you. (See? Your first referral. ;) )

Hope that helps!

Start looking now. It takes time to find a gig.

That said, figure out and rank your goals. List them in terms of what you want, rather than what you don't want.

Having a job hunting strategy will keep you focused and happier in the long run. :)

Let me know if you have more questions.

I am a 4th year student at Southeastern Louisiana University in Hammond, Luoisiana. I will be graduating in the spring of 2009 and I am looking to move out of the south. I want to move as soon as I graduate and I have some ideas for where I want to go. How I am going to get there and where I am going to work is another story. I don't have many contacts and I am looking to change that. I feel a little lost now that college is coming to an end.

Hey everyone. I just joined wired journalist. I found out about it at the Southeast Journalism Conference. I am looking to network with others already in the business. I am a journalism student in Louisiana and will be graduating in a year. Does anyone have any advice for getting into the business and out of the south? Thanks
