When are you going to make the trek to Lafayette to visit me and Trent and take in our fine city? (You could hit up Indy or Chicago, too.)
How are you liking your job? Congrats on the award, btw. You seem to be making a mark and settling in down there. Nothing less would be expected.
My job is going well. It's much better than I hoped when I packed my bags to move to Indiana. I'm not doing as much online as I'd like, but overall, I'm part of great projects and getting to write a lot of big stories and enterprise. I just passed the one-year mark, and though I have room to grow (duh), I don't think I did too shabby my rookie year. If you thought college went fast, try 10-hour days at a breaking news pace — a year goes by quick.
Anyway, I saw you have started a blog. I'll have to add it to the side of MerandaWrites.com in the 'DKS throwback' section so I can track it. Drop me a line or better yet, give me a call!
You can check out a few things that I am doing:
1. My blog: http://www.fredericksburg.com/blogs/dan
Slowly but surely I engage readers to talk to me through my blog. I add things here that may not get in the paper. Or I start a blog on something I am about to write/
2. Online forum: http://fredtalk.fredericksburg.com/postlist.php?Cat=0&Board=Spotsylvania
Here, I have answered reader questions and offered my assistance. I just started this yesterday though. We'll see where it goes, but it's hyperlocal.
3. I've have five multimedia projects under by belt since October. Two that are most government oriented are the one I blogged about: Hot Diggity Dog. Check it out. Instead of covering a boring planning commission rezoning public hearing, I turned it into this nostalgic piece on this store and what they plan to do to it.
The other one is here: http://www.fredericksburg.com/News/Web/2007/102007/1015dirtroad
What happened here is about 35 people unexpectedly showed up at my county board of supervisors' meeting to tell them how annoyed they are with the dirt road. Instead of writing a "Thirty-five rural residents showed up" story, I turned it into this within three days of the meeting. This one was fun. They all are fun.
Yep, Meranda and Trent are making great contributions towards my newsroom. Of course, Meranda was the one who pointed me toward Wired Journalists.
I was impressed by your initiative for suggesting the early a.m. cops shift. That's a strong idea.
Cheers,
Henry
