Incredible. It's truly inspiring to young journalists who refuse to be part of the agency created news where reality is described only to satisfy the market's interests. Thanks a lot! I'm posting this to Our Words In Resistance

I have been writing professionally since 2002. I just finished my bachelor's degree in journalism at Sac State. While looking for a job, an editor recently told me to get out of the industry while I still can... Meanwhile, I freelance and blog.
I believe nonprofit journalism is the best way to avoid the budget woes brought to major newspapers by profit-driven stockholders.

Dan Rather says you're doing it wrong

If you've missed it, check out Dan Rather's plea to journalists at the DNC.

A tad ironically, Dan Rather was part of 60 Minutes - the first news show in history to actually make money. The beginning of the end...

I edit, but only socially...

I've recently become fascinated by Wordonistas and Grammar Nazis who professionally edit grammar and punctuation. Because he still had his cell phone, James Karl Buck was able to use Twitter, a text-messaging network, to let his teacher and colleagues know he had been arrested. From there, his friends hire… Continue

Brilliant quotes tell brief, specific stories

I started to think of quotes in terms of stories after entering Penny Arcade's Ten-Word Story Contest. The idea was to write a World of Warcraft-based story in just ten words. Ernest Hemingway's famous six-word story ("For Sale: Baby shoes, never worn") is a tad too mysterious for me to consider as a story - it leaves too many questions unanswered. What happened to the baby? Who is selling the shoes? Who is the baby? As a reader, I'm lef… Continue

AAJA Career Workshop: Sacramento pros advise students

Last Saturday I went to an Asian American Journalists Association career workshop for students, organized by Judy Lin of the Sacramento Bee. We were asked to bring our portfolios and resumes for critiques, and more professional journalists than I can name were there ready to critique.

The panelists, led by Pamela Wu, all had unique insights to the industry. The main take-home message of the day: intern, intern, intern! Every panelist except one started their career through an internship, where… Continue
