I grew up in Mobile, Ala. and started writing for the local weekly when I was 14. Went to the University of Alabama to study journalism and somehow got stuck in Tuscaloosa for the next 18 years. That happens to a lot of people here. I've been ful...

I don't use a cell phone. I don't have cable TV. I'm on dial-up. I don't even have a microwave.

But I do have a wiki!

And as of Feb. 5, 2008, I have a two-page Web site. It's not pretty, but it works.

Toledo-to-Rome longitudinal estimates by Michael van Langren, 1644, via Milestones in the History of Thematic Cartography, Statistical Graphics, and Data Visualization

Journalism is my second career, after the Marine Corps and odd jobs (some were more odd than others). I started as a reporter in Apache Junction, Ariz. I've moved around a bit but have been at The N&O in Raleigh since late 2000. My duties there have next to nil to do with the Internet.

But I had a very small Web site around 2000. I started Journawiki a few years ago, but I slacked off because I got little help. I'm competing in the Knight News Challenge and learning SPSS, a statistics program.

My knowledge, technology and not, is often more broad than deep. My digital interests are less about storytelling and more about collaboration, interactive data and civic tools.

WJ toolbar

I made a WJ toolbar. You can get it at:
http://wiredjournalists.ourtoolbar.com/

What it has:

RSS feeds for

- Everyone's blog posts

- the WJ feedstream that is on the left side of the main WJ page

- recent WJ activity on news ticker

- Romenesko

Links to about half a dozen main WJ pages (Hopefully, this is set so that if you download the toolbar, you get a link to your specific WJ page.)

Search function,… Continue

Group feeds

I've combined the RSS feeds for the visual journalism groups.

You can see the blended feed on my page, and you can get it here.

I used Feed Digest.

Feb. 5 -- I'm replacing the feed on my page with a WJ education feed made the same way. You can get it here.

In either case, if I overlooked your group,

Not in newspapers?

I'm curious about how many people we have who work outside of the newspaper field, such in magazines or broadcasting.

In case you're afraid of asking an ignorant question ...

I'll do it!

I don't know how to turn on the sound on my computer. It has Windows; I believe XP.

Hi Maurreen! Thanks for the comment. Yes I'm in the international group. Yes, maybe it's a good idea to create a Europe group but I really just hope to learn from everyone here, regardless of where they come from. :)

The regional groups for the U.S. were a good idea though (I don't know if you got the impression I didn't think so). I wish more Portuguese journalists would join this community too.

Maurreen, Thanks for the compliment about the graphics book. That book was a lot of fun to put together. Unfortunately, it didn't sell all that well, so you're one of the few who actually read it. All the best, Jim.

Welcome! Glad to see Raleigh in the house! I agree with you -- The ratio of Facebook groups I participate in to groups I'm a member of is about 1:100.
