Bio
I am a journalist with a broad range of interests and experience in editing, leadership and management, workplace culture and organizational development, journalism training, ethical decision-making, citizen journalism and innovation in media. After nearly 20 years as an editor at The Oregonian, I received a Nieman Fellowship (2002) and studied ethics and online learning at Harvard University. In 2003, the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation invited me to create and direct Tomorrow’s Workforce, a four-year, $2.5 million project at Northwestern University that demonstrated the link between strategic newsroom training and a news organization’s ability to adapt and innovate. Now I am a consultant seeking to help news and newsroom training organizations become more successful. My clients include the Knight Foundation, the Nieman Foundation at Harvard University, and the Knight Digital Media Center at USC.

Interesting job at Nieman/Harvard

I wanted to alert folks to a job opening at Harvard. The Nieman Foundation is looking for someone to head a new Web site that will support digital journalism and to coordinate and display original research (think business model) with the Harvard business school. I've been consulting with the project. They need someone with strong vision and good project management skills. Here's the link:

Hi, Michele:
That would be fine. Feel free to contact me at any time, though like many newsrooms around the country we've reorganized since we last saw each other. Upon the retirement of our longtime editorial page editor, I was asked to move into her slot and Dave Solomon, who was the editor of the paper when we initially applied for the Learning Newsroom, is back in the editor's role. As such, my role has changed considerably, as you might imagine, though I'm still functioning as the No. 2 person in the newsroom. Otherwise, congratulations on the completion of your Tomorrow's Workforce project and the pending start of your leadership and newsroom culture blog for Knight. Please drop me a line when it's up and running so I can check it out.

Hi, Michele:
We met once -- or maybe a couple of times -- at API during the Learning Newsroom symposiums. Nice to see you survived the Tomorrow's Workforce project.

Hi, Michelle.

We met at The News & Observer some months ago. I drove you to the airport.
