Thanks, Mike! Glad to see you here - we may have met briefly at the Networked Journalism conference last October in NY... A lot of the local newspaper staffers here could learn a lot from Pegasus!

Well, all-digital. We're on the web, via email and (sort-of) mobile. Mobile will be improving this year...

Bio
Founder / head windmill tilter of online-only news experiment turned real business, Pegasus News in Dallas / Fort Worth, Texas. We started with a plan in 2005, launched a mini-site on local music that year and then grew it into the originally-planned local news and info site in December of 2006. In July of 2007, we sold the business to Fisher Communications, but stayed on board to lead the growth and eventual expansion. Fisher is nurturing us through the growing pains and once we get the business model refined, we'll look to other cities.

Our big differentiators are:

- Hybrid of staff, content partner, aggregated and user-gen content. (About evenly distributed.)
- Care about data as much as narrative.
- Use the data to customize local and neighborhood content and advertising via our own little magic gizmo called The Daily You.
- We're real people and a part of our community first, and mediati second.

I've been blogging about this stuff since August, 2004. I'm ecstatic to finally see a community like this dedicated to making it real, without worrying about awards, sponsors or control.

Party like it’s 1997

I'm pretty sure it was 1997 that I built the first version of the D Magazine website, although the Internet Archive only shows caches back to late 1998.

At any rate, even though it was barely a decade ago, I'm probably glad that there's no evidence. To my recollection, it would be laugh

Search, data and the responsibilities of news orgs

Originally published on our Square Pegs blog

I've had a couple experiences in the past couple weeks that have made me think hard about the consequences, intended and not, of how technology-- particularly search -- and news interact.

The first came a couple of weeks ago when I was set upon at a conference by a fairly prominent broadcast journalism producer. See, three years

The wrong way to protect community

I wrote the following post yesterday to run on our site after an unpleasant incident with a prospective vendor. Before I posted, I got a just-satisfactory-enough apology and explanation from the president of the company involved to hold my digital tongue. But, there are some points in here worth sharing with this group. Names have been removed to protect the acquitted.

As our regular readers know, our user comments which are (at least compared to a lot of local sites) active, vibrant, mos… Continue

Collaboratition presentation

Thought some might enjoy the presentation I gave last week at the annual meeting of one of our content partners, Dallas iMedia. They're the local city-run cable access TV provider.

Lots of what I said isn't in the slide, but still some germane material about collaborating in the wired world.
