The Journalism Iconoclast

Not offending people is not an option for newspapers

“Not offending people is not a business model. You have to have something to say” - Dan Froomkin, PDF 2009. Inoffensive, “objective” journalism isn’t good journalism, it’s good business. At least it was before the Web. In a world where printing presses — and by extension, competition — are scarce, it’s good business to try to [...]

Transparency comes before objectivity

This is a comment I left on today’s Poynter Chat on teaching social media: The notion of “objectivity” has been a big part of the downfall of traditional journalism. It turned into passionless, he said-she said nonsense. And people are smart enough to know that no one is truly objective. That’s why transparency trumps all. The ideal [...]

All good things must come to end

I’m sad to report that funding for BeatBlogging.Org will run out on Sept. 1 of this year. Being the editor of BeatBlogging.Org has been a great ride. I’ve learned a lot about how beat reporters are adapting to the Web, how social media is changing journalism and where journalism is heading. Working with NYU’s Jay Rosen has [...]

On reinvesting profits

Microsoft gets a lot of grief for many of the things that it does, but we should at least give Microsoft credit for being willing to reinvest profits into research and development. Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer said he is willing to invest up to $11 billion in search over the next five years. I have a [...]

Beware of that crazy Internet (and bad advice from professors)

“When I was in college, a professor said, ‘Beware of the Internet.’ Everyone and anyone is a ‘journalist’ or ‘writer’ because of it. Six years later, I owe the Internet a big hug, because before my memoir Rattled! there was Storked! on glamour.com. But I do consider myself a real writer, and my stories are [...]

WJ Tutorials: How to submit a podcast to iTunes

Submitting a podcast to the iTunes Podcast Directory is a must.

iTunes is the most popular music player and many people use it to automatically manage their podcast subscriptions. Plus, the iTunes Podcast Directory is also a great way for people to discover new podcasts, and you want as many people as possible to be able to discover your podcasts.

Many people will not listen to a podcast if they can't get it automa… Continue

Project management in your newsroom

How does your newsroom go about project management?

Do you have a systematic way of managing products? Do you use Web software like Basecamp or Google Apps? Does your work rely on e-mail for everything.

Or do you have a proprietary method for managing projects? I know some newspaper management/layout software comes with project management features.

I'm interested in hearing about how your newsroom manage projects and, perhaps more importantly, collaborate. Project management is totally differ… Continue

WJ Tutorials: How to start a podcast

Let's get this out there right off the bat: podcasting is a lot easier than you think.

This introductory guide will tell you all you need to make a pretty good podcast. No, it won't tell you how to create interesting content or how to sound good while recording, but it will tell you about all the technology you need.

It's pretty easy to produce a professional-sounding podcast and, just like blogging, one can start podcasting for free.

Let's say you want to be able to do… Continue

How do you feel about journalism right now?

It's a simple question.

I'm not looking for crazy, in-depth answers. I'm thinking more stream of conscious. If someone came up to you and asked how you felt about your industry, your news organization and your job, what would you say?

You can find my candid thoughts on the subject here. This is an excerpt from it:

"It’s a terribly depressing time to seek employment in this embattled industry. But itContinue

Got your mail regarding beatblogging.org, looks very interesting. As an adjunct professor on social media, I keep my eyes peeled for developments in citizen journalism.

Patrick,

A nearly 50 year old journalist checking in on your recent email about using www.beatblogging.org. Covering the fresh produce trade, I started a blog in 2006 that beats on today, with an associated industry discussion group that I manage. I use weekly Google polls, the chat feature for interviews, some audio files and embedded videos. The blog is at www.freshtalk.blogspot.com and the link for the discussion group is on the side of the blog.

Hello, thanks for the luck, I'll need it, quite possibly. School is certainly keeping me busy, but I'm enjoying every minute of it. I read this on your website and really appreciated it:

"Journalism has a bright future for all those who believe. There will always be stories to tell. We just have to find the right ways to tell those stories."

This is true. It's just getting people to believe it. :)
