Crowdsourcing for profit, or survival?

Last year, when I was doing outreach to find garage inventors and innovators for a story on public radio's business show Marketplace, I came across Cambrian House, an organization that asks people to put their ideas before the public for review and improvement. How are you including the public and/or your audience in your reporting?
