The GI Independent's Merging Online/News

My newspaper is going to give this merging thing a go. I'm 90% excited, 10% nervous I think. I decided to blog the experience at stephanieromanski.com, mostly for my own benefit, but maybe there's something in my blathering that others might find useful.

Here's an excerpt of the first post about it:

...When GateHouse took over my paper, the newsroom took control over site content. We’d hoped that this would lead to a more frequently updated sitContinue

Social Media is fun!

The best part of my job is being able to take advantage of some great tools to make my newspaper better. The two best tools so far have been Twitter and Cover It Live.

I've had a Twitter account set up for The Independent for some time now, and it's been slow, but we're getting followers now. I set up a feed to post latest headlines to it and I left it alone. I love stuff that runs itself. But now that our Twittership is growing, I want to bring… Continue

The Great Commenting Debate

To allow commenting on a newspaper website or not. I hate that I can see all sides of this issue. As a longtime internet user, I love the ability to comment right away on a news story I read. I know my 2 cents don't add up to much, but I feel better if I can voice my reactions to something. News sites that don't allow commenting are one sure way to prevent me from coming back.

On the flip side, it only takes one or two trolls hiding behind anonymity to ruin it for everyone else. And when those… Continue

Using Coverit Live during Website relaunch

I cannot say enough wonderful things about CoverItLive.com! Today is our paper's launch of our new design and we've experienced some "issues" with DNS propogation which was confusing for some of our readers. Being able to have a live chat running to discuss the redesign and kinks with it has been helpful and frankly, fun!

I enjoy having this option avai… Continue

Teaching beginners how to blog

My fellow WiredJ member Tonya and I will be teaching our first class on blogging. I'm excited and a little nervous about it. So I'm wondering if I could solicit ideas from you creative types on the stuff we should not forget to teach these guys. Now, these aren't journalists we're teaching, but just regular folks who are interested in blogging (and could potentially become part of our comContinue

Notes = a little space on the homepage for admins to broadcast something; no more than that. There is an e-mail blast feature in here somewhere that we'll use sometime soon for an announcement or two...
