Bio
I'm a videographer at heart, but became a journalist by accident... about 7 years ago. Not that that's a bad thing. I love what I do and even more so, I love sharing what I learn with people who care enough to pay attention.

Long story short, I focus on web video, multimedia and the overall online experience of people who visit our site. I also lead a newsroom-wide multimedia training program at the Ventura County Star, sharing tips I've picked up either on my own or from other great minds.

Getting people to buy into video was the easy part. I guess my next step will be to get a few of our reporters blogging. And I suppose that means I'll have to start blogging too at some point.

If only time didn't move so fast.

Better video through self evaluation

I like to think I know what I'm doing with a video camera. But occasionally, things happen to remind me that knowledge and practical application sometimes don't mesh.

In the newsroom, I try to help reporters and photographers with their videos and offer simple tips "for next time." I'm usually jokingly critical when I see errors they've been taught to avoid. Let's face it. You can't avoid every potential sound or lighting problem all the time. But I like to think that the reminders and Monday-m… Continue

Tag-teaming a big story

Today was an interesting day for the newsroom at VenturaCountyStar.com. There was a shooting at a local junior high school involving two students. Two reporters and a photographer were dispatched as soon as the call came in. One of the reporters took a video camera.

For the text story, both reporters called story details as they became available. Within 45 minutes of getting to the scene, I was out the door to do a quick exchange of video tapes and sd cards (for the photographer). Within an hou… Continue

Getting started with web video

This site seems to have a pretty good mix of both seasoned online producers and beginners. I think I'll start things off by giving the beginners some simple advice for getting started with web video. In subsequent posts I'll tackle things like storytelling, shooting, equipment, editing tricks and whatever else comes to mind.

I am by no means the man with all the answers, but I have been doing web video long to have some things to share. If I should happen to miss or overlook anything,… Continue

Anthony, I'm doing a workshop on multimedia collaboration at The Oklahoman next week. Your tag-teaming example will fit great (and be timely, too). If you have anything to add about the collaborative process, give me a call, 703-715-3300. Thanks.

Hi Anthony, I worked at the Star with you a couple years back. I left to have a baby and work/live in Washington state now. Good to see you on here!

Hey Anthony, did you know that News Videographer has contributors? I'd love for your to blog about your personal experiences changing your newsroom into a multimedia/online journalism organization.
