Growing online community—looking for feedback

My employer, Sound Publishing, has me on a kind of fact finding/info hunting mission as we look for ways to improve our community newsbrands and their Web sites. We want to know what other sites (traditional news sites, blogs, etc.) are doing to build communities around their brands. I'm hoping some of you won't mind sharing answers to a few of these questions (and please feel free to send me a priv… Continue

Advice for '09 journalism grads

Just posted some of my thoughts on '09 grads who maybe aren't quite ready for the real journalism world. My best advice: Don't freak out; there's still time to learn. Continue

Investigative journalists: Take credit!

Forgot to post a link to my newest post the other day, where I implore investigative journalists to make their hard work more obvious. Essentially, I think that with so much "you'll miss us when we're gone" talk from old school print journalists, they need to drop the humility act and start yelling in the form of page banners and logos: "WE WORKED OUR ASSES OFF ON THIS HUGE INVESTIGATIVE PIECE AND WITHOUT US… Continue

No News is Bad News mini wrap & link

I've begun the process of moving this blog over to Paul Balcerak on WordPress. I'll still be active here, but my posts won't appear in full anymore. The reason for the move is that I like WordPress's blogging platform a lot better and it makes mobile posting a lot easier. The No News is Bad News: Seattle as a no newspaper town? panel/forum turned out as I expected (little discussion on busines… Continue

#cfund wrap and my crazy ideas

Got into the #cfund discussion this morning and early this afternoon. Two impressions: (1) For a guy who says he knows nothing about business, I find myself in business-related discussions all too often; and (2) if today's chat was any indication, this "how do we fund journalism" debate could end up lasting longer than the industry itself. That's not to knock the debate — I applaud Alexandre fo… Continue

Teaching old people new tricks

One of the things I've talked about in the past — even though I'm firmly committed to discussing the future — is the idea that this animosity between new media journalists and old print journalists doesn't have to exist. The older crowd has skills that can be useful in new media and we owe it to them and ourselves to help bring them up to speed. So… Continue

Refocusing

It's been a while since I blogged here. I have problems blogging on a regular basis for whatever reason. I also get off track on Twitter every now and then. Whatever. The nice part about the Web is that it can constantly be reinvented. It's with that that I'm refocusing my efforts. I'm making a push to post more about innovations in delivering the news as well as the business model for doing so (less time bashing curmudgeons and talking about… Continue

'Saving' journalism: Print product = Web digest?

Steve Yelvington taught me a thing or two earlier this week about how print isn't really dead:
In spite of the worst economy since Roosevelt, many U.S. newspapers are still turning profits in the 15-20 percent range, and the U.S. newspaper industry is still turning around 50 billion dollars of gross revenue every year. Several major newspaper companies are in big financial trouble because they borrowed heavily to fin

Future of newspapers: Investigative reporting only?

I got into a discussion about news consumption and the future of journalism earlier today with some Twitter followers of pnwlocalnews (that's the account I Tweet from on the clock) and one brought up something I've considered in the past: Continue

Web 'visibility'

Everyone runs into those stretches of life where, for whatever reason — work, life, etc. — the weird second life that exists on the Web just doesn't get tended to like usual. Such has been the case with me. I recently got engaged and have been dedicating a lot of time to everything that goes along with it — cake tasting, getting photos taking, building a Web site.... I've done my best to keep active elsewhere on the Web, though, which is a lesson I learned from… Continue

Link journalism — ur doin' it right.

Since Josh Korr (Publishing 2.0) and Judith Townend (journalism.co.uk) basically said everything that needed to be said about the link journalism project I was involved in last week, I'm going to cherry-pick their posts for things I'd like to expand upon. First, though, a quick reminder of what happened: As we… Continue

Publish2 on Washington aggregate flood coverage

Spinning off of the shared flood coverage I talked about in my last post, Publish2 Editor Josh Korr posted the "story behind the story" over at Publishing 2.0:
The discussion about journalism’s future so often focuses on Big Changes — Kill the print edition! Flips for everyone! Reinvent business models NOW! — that it’s easy to forget how simple innovation can be. Sometimes all you need is a few Tweets, a bunch of links, and some

Link/aggregate journalism in action with Publish2

Myself and a few other Washington state journalists — mostly competitors of mine — met on Twitter today and inadvertently organized a little team to aggregate coverage on the floods in Washington state. We're currently Twittering links under the hashtag #waflood and aggregating links (which some of us have pasted into widgets) using Publish2. (… Continue

The networking skill set: Old print's real fear

This is quite possibly the best insight I've heard thus far on new media in journalism:
Even though blogging has been around for more than a decade, there is still an unease about blogging among some professional journalists, often encapsulated in the phrase, "blogging isn't journalism." This is a tired argument that mistakes form for content. (
