I have now tried out what you suggested. The volume was set in the middle range; I tried moving it all the way up, and nothing happened.
I originally realized the problem when I tried to play a DVD movie. Then I tried to play a random WAV file, and I still got nothing.

If there is no Speaker Icon beside the clock, Click on Start, Click Control Panel, Double Click on the Speaker Icon labeled Sounds and Audio Devices. Make sure Place Volume Icon In the Taskbar is Checked
...is to ask another one.
Like... Do you have speakers or headphones attached to the computer?
If you do, then, step two: Look in the lower right hand corner of the screen (near the clock). Is there an icon that looks like a speaker (you have to used your imagination to make it out)?
If so, see if there's a red bar (international "no" sign) across it? Wheter there is or not, click on that icon. You might be able to figure out volume settings from there.
