Wired Journalists

A Publish2 network

What is your newspaper/news organization doing to promote staff bloggers? Excerpting in print, adding to bylines, house ads, etc.?

We've begun some staff blogs, but aren't really sure how to promote them. They aren't doing very well, but we also haven't promoted them — at all.

So, what do you do? Does it work? How have you built a community around your blog? Is anyone else out there struggling?

Also, what kind of page views are you getting, compared to rest of Web site, or circulation, or whatever? I feel like our numbers are pretty dismal, but I don't know how we're doing compared to other similar-sized papers (25,000 circ). So how are your numbers?

I thought this advice from Craig Stoltz's Web 2.Oh...really? was really good:

"When you write something really good, send it to other bloggers whose audience you’d like to reach." (Click here for the full blog post.)

Also — and I hate to state the obvious — but why not promote your blog here? We're all journalists trying to learn from each other. I'd check out your blog if you had a link to it in this post.

Everyone writing here seems to be working with writers who are convinced that blogging is in their best interest, or at least part of their job. I assume that's the case if you having people promoting on social networks.

How did you get writers to that point? I'm having problems with my newspaper staff who see the paper's blog as just unnecessary work for them, instead of an integral part of the paper.

Well, I guess I'm not alone, at least. I have been trying to promote them on the usual suspects — Digg, del.icio.us, etc., and some of my bloggers are promoting themselves on MySpace, Facebook, etc. But I feel we could do more. I like the idea of linking from topical news stories ... I'll try to convince our paper to try that. Thanks guys!

Excerpt your blogs in print; excerpt comments, if you have any, in print as well. I'd work on the bloggers to get them to promote their stuff on their own in social networks. I'm not there yet myself; just starting to work on our bloggers on that very thing.... Good luck!
