I wasn't surprised when the St. Petersburg Times won a Pulitzer this year for politifact.com -- but it marked a seismic shift in the industry and the Pulitzers, an award that's been open only to print newspapers in the past (online only stories were allowed in 2006, but this year is the first that news outlets without a print counterpart could compete).
Anyway, Politifact.com is the product of code, a database and skilled journalists. But "skilled journalists" who also know what code and a database and how they fit together are, rare. So, I've started a group -- for those experienced and those still learning (or really, those who want to learn) -- how programming and the news can go together.
