Commenting Survey Results!

We ran a short, quick, painless survey over the last week or so to get a rough idea about where reporters, editors, and online news professionals think the commenters on their news sites are the most or least civil.

What's your commenter community like? Are the readers who chime in at the bottom of news stories any friendlier to each other than the ones who troll forums?

The results are live now

We're currently Twittering links under the hashtag #waflood and aggregating links (which some of us have pasted into widgets) using Publish2. (… Continue

Commenting survey results

[Cross-posting this in a few places, so forgive me if the formatting is a bit imperfect here.] For a couple years now, I've been working with editors, reporters, and commenters on news sites taking the following hypothesis as a given:
Commenters will be the most civil in the place that is the most public.
For example, I expected commenters on news stories, where more people could see their words, to be more civil than commenters on blog posts on a news site, whic… Continue

How can the Drudge Report be one of the ' best designed' sites on the web?!

This, I would rate as the most provocative design post (relating to a news site) of 2008. I read it on the 37signals.com blog (which incidentally is read and handled by people who know a lot about web design). Here's the contention: "... I still think that the Drudge Report is an aesthetic masterpiece even though I also consider it ugly. Can good design also be ugly? I think Drudge proves it can." ... Not surprisngly, the post has attracted 537 comments on the blog (last count), though I don't… Continue
