Wired Journalists

Get wired to win.

I first grew my beard as a 20-something baby-faced editor. It made me look a bit more mature, when I was supervising reporters many years older than me. Now that I'm 50-something with a salt-and-pepper beard that's mostly salt, it doesn't seem like such a good idea. But it's part of my face now. And I don't like shaving (and I'm pretty sure that's no longer a baby face underneath).

I totally know what you mean Steve! I'm kind of on the tail end of that 'baby-faced editor' period.. and debating when to shave it off. Or style it into an eccentric bicycle-handle-bar-style mustache, or something.

I must say, as a young journo I am enjoying these glory days, especially since when I do shave I'm left looking about 12.

When I was a 22-year-old baby-faced rigging technician in the movie business, older people who I ordered around thought I was 30.

Now that I'm past 30, I've totally lost track of how old people think I am - not sure if the full beard makes me look older or less responsible. Are the two mutually exclusive? People keep hiring me, one way or the other.

I think I have to keep the full beard to maintain the appearance of alternativeness of so sort...
