I'd love to look at some successful social-network sites started by small newspapers, or journalists at small papers, especially on Ning. Any suggestions?

Hi, Jack. Just found this post.

Check out Delaware Moms, run by folks at The News Journal in Wilmington, Del.

It's starting to thrive, and oddly enough, has inspired a new print product.

My company's national dev team created an pretty ineffective social network site for high school sports last year. It had a lot of bugs and wasn't user friendly. My general manager said she wanted something she could be a little more proud of, so this year we will be launching a Ning version of the site.

It's still in it's testing stage, but it will be located at http://foxhilitesdfw.ning.com and will be open to the public in the fall.

I saw an article somewhere about a small newspaper using Ning for community discussions. Personally I think Ning is also great for something like high school sports. We will be encouraging students to upload game photos and video. I'll incorporate scores and contests on the page as well and hopefully the community will grow.

I'm just a little more afraid of moderating a high school community than the adult blog and message board community that currently exists on our site.

Our paper started a social networking site (on ning) for high school students. It's a closed site, overseen by teachers in our area. It's part of our Newspaper in Education program.

Also, the reporter who covers retail is starting his own social networking site. He already has an blog, three-times a week column where he reports on news business coming to the area. He also has a weekly e-newsletter that goes to more than 2,000 people The social networking site is an extension of that community building.

Here are some stories our publication recently posted about social networking. I write about the Bakerfield Californian's Bakotopia Web site and Boston.com and how they are integrating social networking into their Web operations. Boston.com also launched a social networking site called BoMoms.com targeted toward mothers in the Boston community.
