I have a blog!

Hello again, Wired Journalists. I haven't been as active as I should be on this and other social networking sites for the past couple months, so I hope you'll indulge me just a bit. Back in January and February, I posted a couple times about the commitment I have made to become more wired in 2008, inspired by a post by Howard Owens. Well, I'm getting there. My biggest accomplishment so far is this: www.jenniferthornberry.com Yes… Continue

Can we afford to be 'blissfully unaware' of multimedia?

I recently attended a Society of Professional Journalists event on social networking sites and how they can be used in reporting. The event was in Louisville, Ky., my hometown. I work in Winchester, Ky., about 90 miles away. I had to drive back to Lexington, where I live, that night after the event. That was a total distance of 170 miles. Oh, and it rained on the way back. Hard.

Bear with me. There is a reason I mention how far I drove.

At the event, one of the people who sat a… Continue

Getting wired in 2008: month one assessment

Since I have made it my professional resolution to get more wired in 2008, I plan to do a brief assessment at the beginning of each month of how I'm doing. So, since January is over and we are now in to February, this is my first of these little personal assessment posts.

As I have stated before, my resolution began when someone in my company passed along a link to Howard Owens' blog entry,… Continue

What’s it like being a journalist?

What’s it like being a journalist?

Angelea posted that question in the comments section of my previous blog post.

In answer, I offer this quote from Walter Cronkite:

“Yesterday’s newspaper, carefully filed away, is the custodian of our history. From those newspaper files future historians will wring from the past the very essence of who we were and the world in which we lived.

The futur… Continue

JET goes digital

This is my first blog entry ever!

I'm a print journalist by trade. Most of my background is in feature writing, copy editing and page design. I got back into newspapers almost a year ago after a short stint at a B2B magazine. The glitzy magazine world just didn't satisfy me like I thought it would, and I missed the smell of newspaper ink and the pressure of meeting a deadline. So, I went back into the trenches.

However, since then, I've seen the state of the print industry. I d… Continue

Hi Jennifer.
Before becoming an ME, I was a news editor and copy editor/designer so I'm always glad to meet others in the field. Glad to see you are working hard to transition to multimedia.

Hello Ryan,

Thanks for the welcome. This is a great site. I have already joined five groups and am interested in seeing what they do.

Welcome!

I've seen a few copy editors here so far. Maybe we should start a group for Editing Breaking News?

Where should we start?
