Web Producer
About Me:
I worked for two-plus years as a copy editor before switching to online producing Jan. 1, 2008. Now I keep spokesmanreview.com updated, package content and edit multimedia for spokesmanreview.com, the website for The Spokesman-Review, Spokane's daily newspaper. I'm interested in connecting with people who have ideas for keeping newspaper websites dynamic and relevant.

Hello. Does the Spokesman offer Web internships? I tried looking around online and couldn't find much of an answer about types of internships or application deadlines.

Hi Andrew,
I was an online producer for my school paper then a copy editor. I'll also be an online editor for the Indy Star this summer. I, like you, am always looking for tips on keeping Web sites dynamic and interactive.

We have developers, but they don't work inside the newsroom. Good luck with the redesign!

Hey Andrew, no we haven't met. I'm relatively new to web producing for a news site. I am not trained as a journalists but rather as a graphic designer that dabbled in web design. I got into web producing when I got my current job. Maria Gonzalez is my partner and we both applied for jobs at the same time, got them, made the move from Los Angeles and I just threw myself full-bore into it. Started finding blogs, started reading articles, started poking around, started shooting video, learned iMovie, attended a few workshops, learned Final Cut and I am still learning. I'm hoping to pick your brain a bit as well. I too was hired initially as part-time copy editor/part-time web content editor and starting this month was moved over the to web side of thins full time. So there you go, that's me in a nutshell.

Thanks for the add. And no, I'm far from solo here. We've got an online director, a multimedia coordinator/videographer, a full-time programmer with another to be hired, a producer/videographer, an online city editor, two online breaking news reporters and two online producers (including me). We've also got a dedicated database reporter, although that's sort of an experiment. After our layoffs/reorganization, our editor decided to make a big investment in online. And in a couple months we're supposed to have site redesign, so we'll also give the appearance of being super invested.

I have a staff: one multimedia reporter and one Web content producer. But we also have three people from other departments who do the night update on the Web site certain nights of the week. Are you solo?

Thanks for the note. We redesigned Recordnet.com last year and we're starting to create some cool multimedia, but I want to do so much more with the site. How do you like being a content producer?
